From privacy invasion, stalking, to being under constant scrutiny and pressure to produce, it is a heavy price to pay for fame and adoration. David Lowery’s new film Mother Mary explores our relationship to pop stardom, with Anne Hathaway playing singer and pop icon Mother Mary. After suffering from a personal crisis and stepping away from music, she is ready to return. But as the day of her debut draws closer, she realises the dress she is meant to wear does not represent her. She then turns to her ex-friend, world-renowned costume designer Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel, to make her outfit, and chaos ensues. On Thursday (April 23), we celebrated the film’s release with A24 by hosting a screening at Picturehouse Central. Coel, Hathaway and Lowery introduced the movie to a full house. Interviewed by our executive editor Jack Sunnucks, Coel revealed that Lowery’s script inspired her character, as did the late Alexander McQueen. “We spoke a little bit about Alexander McQueen [when conceptualising the character], and if there was any fashion designer that inspires Sam, it’s him.” If you’d like to attend more special screenings, join Dazed Club and download our app here.
